Youth Activities

The Summer Solstice Jazz Festival is a family-friendly event and a great opportunity to expose children of all ages to the sounds of jazz. Families will enjoy a children's activites area as well as a peformance by high school students in the MSU Community Music School Jazz Orchestra.

 

Children's Activities Area

The East Lansing Public Library hosts an interactive children's area as part of the two-day celebration of jazz. Kids of all ages are welcome to take part in an arts and crafts project inspired by music-themed books.

 

Jazz Education Camp

The MSU Community Music School hosts its annual week-long summer jazz camp for high school students, grades 9 - 12, in conjunction with the festival. The jazz camp, scheduled to coincide with the festival, brings a broad spectrum of jazz educational activities will take place as part of the festival.

 

This year, internationally-acclaimed jazz bassist, vocalist and composer, Esperanza Spalding, will instruct students during the camp and then perform with the Community Music School Jazz Orchestra on stage during the festival.
